  41. Q:  What is PC/GEOS?
  42.  
  43. A:  PC/GEOS is a GUI (Graphical User Interface) developed by Geoworks 
  44.     (formerly Berkeley Softworks).  It runs on top of the MS-DOS 
  45.     operating system.  It provides a fully pre-emptive multitasking, 
  46.     multithreaded environment for any DOS machine (8088 through 80486) 
  47.     with 512k of memory and a hard drive.  It also provides virtual 
  48.     memory for its applications (ie, your disk space can be treated 
  49.     like a lot of slow RAM), and, from what I'm told, applications 
  50.     written for PC/GEOS are not bound by the MS-DOS 640k barrier.

  52.     Geoworks Ensemble, or GWE, is a suite of programs which run under 
  53.     the PC/GEOS GUI.  The latest version is 1.2.  There is also 
  54.     Geoworks Pro, which includes some enhancements over GWE 1.2 and 
  55.     includes the DOS spreadsheet Quattro Pro SE from Borland.  GWE 
  56.     Lite is a subset of the GWE suite of apps which comes bundled with 
  57.     many computer systems.

  59. Q:  Is PC/GEOS a real OS?
  60.  
  61. A:  It certainly is a real OS.  DOS is only used for the file system 
  62.     support.  BTW, many people consider MS Windows to be a real OS 
  63.     too. It mostly depends on who's trying to sell you what.  :-)  
  64.     PC/GEOS is one of the first (if not the first to ship) object 
  65.     oriented OS's.  PC/GEOS is a fully pre-emptive multi-threaded, 
  66.     multi-tasking OS designed to run on everything from an original 
  67.     IBM PC XT to the latest barn-burning i486 boxes.

  69. Q:  Is PC/GEOS an alternative to Windows? 
  70.  
  71. A:  That depends on what you mean by "alternative".  It won't run 
  72.     Windows applications, but it will provide you with a lot of 
  73.     functionality that Windows won't, especially if you have a small 
  74.     machine (< 80386 cpu, < 2 meg RAM).

  76. Q:  So where do I get a copy of PC/GEOS?  Is it shareware? 
  77.  
  78. A:  No, it's not shareware.  You can get it from pretty much any 
  79.     MS-DOS software retailer.  Pick up a copy of PC Magazine or Byte 
  80.     and flip through the ads.  Prices range from ~$115.00 (at 
  81.     FastMicro) on up.

  83. Q:  Where can I get a demo version of PC/GEOS? 
  84.  
  85. A:  The same place you can get GWE -- through a software dealer.  It 
  86.     costs $9.95, which goes towards the price of the full package 
  87.     should you decide to buy it.  The GWE demo will let you do 
  88.     everything except save to disk.

  90. #Q:  When is PC/GEOS 2.0 going to be launched?

  92. #    According to Brian Dougherty (GW's CEO) at the San Diego Computer 
  93. #    Fair, v2 will enter testing at the end of this month (Sept '92), 
  94. #    and go to beta this Fall.  It sounds like we can expect it to be 
  95. #    released (along with a slew of 3rd-party apps) sometime around

  100. #A:  Here's what I've heard.  This info is based on Brian Dougherty's

  104. #    GeoWrite - The new version will have four times the features of 
  105. #    the old version (according to BD), yet will be under 50k.  Some

  132. Q:  Does PC/GEOS support MS-DOS 5.0 or DR-DOS 6.0 task-switching?

  134. A:  Version 1.2 of GWE supports MS-DOS 5.0 task-switching if your 
  135.     hot-key is the default (Ctrl-Esc).
  136.  
  137.     The DR Dos TaskMax (task switcher) ships with the update version 
  138.     6.01 of DR Dos.  The task switching is only supported in Pro (not 
  139.     in v1.2). The current support allows you to cut/paste between 
  140.     PC/GEOS applications and DOS applications.

  142. Q:  Are there any third-party apps for PC/GEOS?
  143.  
  144. A:  GWE versions 1.0 through Pro have shipped with America On-Line by 
  145.     America On-Line (fomerly Quantum).  There are a couple of products 
  146.     that are in late beta.
  147.  
  148.     Also, Certified Software has evidently released some software for 
  149.     the GEOS environment.  Certified Software's phone number is 
  150.     1-800-582-4455.  The programs include Colorizer for GEOS, $14.95; 
  151.     Clocks for GEOS, $14.95; and GEOS Kids & Vegas Games, $29.95.

  153. Q:  What fonts are available for PC/GEOS?
  154.  
  155. A:  GeoWorks Ensemble v1.0->Pro ship with 8 (9?) base outline fonts. 
  156.     There are currently three (3) font packs available directly from 
  157.     GeoWorks that provide a pile of typefaces.  Both Micrologic and 
  158.     Atech have font conversion programs that support the GeoWorks 
  159.     Nimbus font format. 
  160.  
  161.     Shipping with v1.2 (and later) is a PC/GEOS application called the 
  162.     Nimbus Font Converter (in the Extras folder under the World 
  163.     directory) that will convert from the URW Nimbus font format into 
  164.     the PC/GEOS Nimbus font format.

  166. Q:  Are there any anonymous ftp sites for PC/GEOS stuff?
  167.  
  168. A:  There are currently two anonymous ftp sites with PC/GEOS-specific 
  169.     files.  First, there is mir.eco.utexas.edu [128.83.172.17].  The 
  170.     files are in the /pub/geos directory.  Access time is 6:00 pm to 
  171.     8:00 am CST.  If you want to upload, PKZIP your file and put it in 
  172.     the /inbasket directory.  Then send a note to Tony Yen 
  173.     (tyen@mundo.eco.utexas.edu).  Use the filename as the subject of 
  174.     the message, and leave a single-line description in the body of 
  175.     the message.  Tony's doing this out of the goodness of his heart, 
  176.     and will take the site down if traffic becomes excessive or any 
  177.     funny stuff happens.

  179.     Second, the army's Simtel-20 archive now has a GEOWORKS directory 
  180.     in its msdos section.  The best way to access the Simtel archive 
  181.     is through one of its mirror sites, like oak.oakland.edu or 
  182.     wuarchive.wustl.edu.  If you have a program to upload to Simtel, 
  183.     please send e-mail to Keith Petersen (w8sdz@tacom-emh1.army.mil) 
  184.     with a short description of the files you wish to submit.  He will 
  185.     provide you with instruction on how to upload.  Please do *not* 
  186.     send files to that mailbox.

  188. Q:  As I understood it, PC/GEOS was originally the PM/LITE (or OS/2 
  189.     lite).  IBM dropped it and so it was released as Ensemble.
  190.  
  191. A:  This is not correct.  PC/GEOS was developed by Berkeley Softworks 
  192.     (now Geoworks), not by IBM.  I heard that Geoworks was at one time 
  193.     working towards an agreement bundling GWE with IBM's PS/1's, but 
  194.     that agreement fell through.  I have also heard that IBM talked to 
  195.     Geoworks about taking over PM/Lite, but nothing ever came of that 
  196.     either.

  198. Q:  Which character set does PC/GEOS use? Most European languages need 
  199.     the special characters above CHR(127)... 
  200.  
  201. A:  PC/GEOS has quite a large available character set.  For instance, 
  202.     all the vowels can be given acute, dieresis, grave, and circumflex 
  203.     accents in both upper- and lower-case.  You can also use the 
  204.     Spanish ~n (as in se~nor), Danish (?) O-with-a-slash-through-it, 
  205.     the German ess-tset (double s), and many other special language 
  206.     characters.

  208.     You also have a choice of various typographical, punctuation, 
  209.     currency, and mathematical symbols.  These are all well-documented 
  210.     in the manual. 
  211.  
  212. Q:  I don't like the UI (user interface).  Can I customize it?
  213.  
  214. A:  PC/GEOS has pioneered the concept of the Generic UI.  What this 
  215.     means is that the application is written to a very powerful 
  216.     dynamically bound object oriented UI.  At runtime the system 
  217.     'binds' the Generic UI to a Specific UI.  The only currently 
  218.     shipping UI is a Motif based Specific UI.  Others, I'm sure will 
  219.     come when time permits.

  221. Q:  Does PC/GEOS exist in any other language versions than English?
  222.  
  223. A:  Certainly.  PC/GEOS is currently available in seven languages: 
  224.     Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

  226. Q:  Is PC/GEOS available as a pen system?
  227.  
  228. A:  Pen/GEOS was announced by Geoworks CEO Brian Dougherty at the 
  229.     recent Pen Computing conference.  Due to PC/GEOS's object-oriented 
  230.     design, once the basic pen support was added to the appropriate 
  231.     system level objects, all of the applications autmatically have 
  232.     basic Pen support.  Pen-specific applications are sure to follow.

  234. Q:  Is there a way to print using my printer's built-in fonts?  
  235.  
  236. A:  As far as I know, there's no way to embed printer codes in a GWE 
  237.     document.  One thing you might try is to set your printer to use 
  238.     the font you want before you enter GWE.  Then print using the 
  239.     text-only mode.  I haven't tried this, so I don't know whether is 
  240.     works.  If you try it, let me know.

  242. Q:  Can anyone tell me what the difference is between Ensemble and 
  243.     Pro?  
  244.  
  245. A:  Geoworks Pro comes bundled with Quattro Pro SE, a DOS-based 
  246.     spreadsheet from Borland that you can buy separately.
  247.  
  248.     There's a spreadsheet viewer in Pro which works with Quattro and 
  249.     Lotus files.  The viewer runs within the PC/GEOS environment, and 
  250.     allows you to do font changes, printing, and cutting to paste into 
  251.     other GeoWorks apps.  You can't edit the spreadsheet contents 
  252.     unless you select an "Edit Spreadsheet" menu item.  That menu 
  253.     selection launches Quattro Pro by dropping into DOS first.
  254.  
  255.     Geoworks Pro also has a few improvements over GWE 1.2, such as the 
  256.     ability to use the DR DOS 6.0 task switcher.  The Pro distribution 
  257.     contains a bunch of DOS program launchers that were bundled with 
  258.     various OEM configurations of Ensemble.  Launchers are loaded onto 
  259.     your system if you identify it as one of the OEM systems. This is 
  260.     more of a packaging difference than a product difference; GeoWorks 
  261.     simply chose to distribute the OEM versions and the generic 
  262.     version in a single orderable item.
  263.  
  264. Q:  I can't get my backspace character to work with GeoComm when I 
  265.     dial into Unix.  What's wrong?
  266.  
  267. A:  As I understand it, there is no way to send the DELETE (ASCII 
  268.     127) character with GeoComm.  If your system is expecting to see 
  269.     the DELETE character, you may have to set it to use the backspace 
  270.     character (Control-H, ASCII 8) instead.  Two examples follow:
  271.  
  272.     If your problem is at the command line, you may need to set the 
  273.     backspace key to erase.  Try the following command to see if it 
  274.     helps:
  275.  
  276.         stty erase "^H"
  277.  
  278.     If your problem is with GNU emacs, you need to set the backspace 
  279.     key to delete characters to the left.  Try this command to see if 
  280.     it helps:
  281.  
  282.         Meta-X global-set-key "\C-h" 'backward-delete-char-untabify
  283.  
  284.     If you absolutely must send a DELETE character, try this:
  285.     First, create a file called DELETE.TXT containing just the DELETE 
  286.     (Ascii 127) character.  You'll have to use a DOS-based text editor 
  287.     to do it.  Then when you want to send the DELETE character, just 
  288.     select "Type From Text File" from the FILE menu.  In the dialog 
  289.     box, you choose DELETE.TXT.  That's all; you've just sent a DELETE 
  290.     character.

  292. Q:  How can I convert files from my DOS word processor's format to 
  293.     GeoWrite and back again?
  294.  
  295. A:  There are no file conversion facilities yet, although I hear it's 
  296.     a high priority item (as is everything else these days :-)  Those 
  297.     people at Geoworks must be sorely overworked.).  The best you can 
  298.     do is to save from your DOS word processor in ASCII, plain-text, 
  299.     or generic WP format.  GeoWrite allows you to import and export 
  300.     plain ASCII file.

  302. Q:  I'm running GWE 1.2 with Stacker installed.  Drive C is my stacker 
  303.     volume (through SSWAP).  For some reason GeoManager insists on 
  304.     looking at drive E for the /geoworks/world directory, even though 
  305.     when I exit geoworks, I'm on drive C.  Any ideas?

  307. A:  Check the volume labels for drives C, D, and E.  If they're 
  308.     identical, then use GeoManager to edit the volume labels so that 
  309.     each drive has its own distinct label.  
  310.  
  311. Q:  I was using GeoComm in vt100 mode to edit some files on Unix.  All 
  312.     of a sudden GeoComm blew up when I deleted a line.  What's wrong?
  313.  
  314. A:  GeoComm seems to have trouble with the vt100 code for changing the 
  315.     the scrolling region of the terminal.  The code is of the form 
  316.     ^[[#;#r, where the first # is the top line of the scrolling region 
  317.     and the second # is the bottom line.  Below is a revised termcap 
  318.     (from Ted Dunning) that should circumvent the problem.  To use 
  319.     this termcap, copy the section between the "cut here" lines and 
  320.     copy it to a file in the home directory of your Unix account, say 
  321.     geovt100.  Then insert one of the following lines in your startup 
  322.     file:

  341. Q:  When I install other fonts, they are displayed in the fonts menu 
  342.     in the order they were installed.  Is there a way to have them 
  343.     in alphabetical order?
  344.  
  345. A:  Currently, the font menu is built in the order that the font files 
  346.     are found in the directory.  So, if you want them in alphabetical 
  347.     order, use a DOS directory sort program (e.g. Symantec's/Norton's 
  348.     DS).
  349.  
  350. Q:  I'm having trouble importing graphics file into PC/GEOS.  
  351.     Sometimes when I use the Import option in GeoDraw it refuses to 
  352.     import the file.  Other times it will import it but the colors are 
  353.     all screwed up.  What's going on?
  354.  
  355. A:  The problem is twofold.  First, PC/GEOS is currently limited to a 
  356.     maximum of 16 colors.  If you try to import a file with more than 
  357.     16 colors, GeoDraw gives you a message about an incompatible 
  358.     bitmap.  Second, GeoDraw forces any picture you import to use the 
  359.     PC/GEOS color palette instead of the palette embedded in the 
  360.     picture itself.  This is what screws up the colors.
  361.  
  362.     You need to get a copy of the files piclb183.zip and ensembul.zip 
  363.     from the /pub/geos directory of ecst.csuchico.edu.  Piclb183.zip 
  364.     contains a program called Piclab which is useful for manipulating 
  365.     GIF files.  Among other things, Piclab lets you alter the default 
  366.     color map of a GIF file, and lets you set the number of colors as 
  367.     well.  Ensembul.zip is a file containing information on how to use 
  368.     Piclab to convert your picture for use with GEOS.
